Vitex agnus-castus, well known as chaste tree berry is one of the most frequently used herbs in the botanical toolkit. Previously, these dried berries were used in monasteries throughout the Middle Ages as a spicy seasoning that was thought to help reduce libido.
Additionally, Vitex was frequently prescribed to women in the mid-1900s for anxiety, “sexual irritability,” and melancholia. Perhaps for these reasons, the herb has been named chaste berry, monk’s pepper, and Abraham’s balm.
Furthermore, throughout history, it was frequently used to help in breastfeeding and to enhance menstruation. Today, Vitex relieves premenstrual syndrome symptoms, aids in the management of polycystic ovarian syndrome symptoms, and has been considered the best supplement for perimenopause/ menopause prescribed in neuropathic care(1).
